It’s All in Your Head

Healthy eating begins in the mind. I know this may sound strange but it’s true. You must first accept that a large part of the journey to health and wellness begins with what you put in your mouth. Developing a positive attitude about eating healthy and being innovative in your preparation of healthy foods will create more desire to practice healthy eating habits.

Preparing Delicious Tasty Dishes

The next step to this piece of the puzzle is putting a little more effort into preparing your own healthy dishes at home. There are many things that you can do to prepare delicious healthy dishes. The options can vary from using healthy salt alternative and spices that give foods amazing depth, aroma, and flavor to introducing with totally new foods in your meals. The important point to take home is the need to be open to cooking in a way that creates delicious flavors without compromising health.

Try New Foods

Another strategy that may help fuel a positive attitude towards healthy foods is being open to trying new foods. This is an exciting thought. There are many foods that you have probably never tried and now is your opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and try as many new healthy foods as possible. When you expand your taste buds, you give yourself more options and keep your possible menu alternatives versatile and full. It may even mean that you put a different twist on a food that you’ve always eaten. For example, you might try a brand of yogurt from an organic frozen yogurt supplier instead of the brand you usually buy at the supermarket. The possibilities are endless.

Like many things, the decision to make healthier food choices begins in the mind. Begin your health and wellness journey by committing to having an open mind about healthy food choices as well as foods you’ve never tried before. Look up recipes and research ways to season foods with healthy spices and salt alternatives. As long as you are open and positive about eating well you will find foods that you will enjoy and be open to expanding your current menu choices.

When Sunlight is Not Enough, Take Forti-D

Forti-D–a new supplement from Unilab.

Most of us in the modern world no longer produce enough Vitamin D in our bodies because of so many factors. You see, the essential element that stimulates Vitamin D production in our bodies is sunlight. But despite the abundance of sunlight in the Philippines, many people are not getting enough.

This was proven in a study conducted here in Bacolod City sponsored by Unilab. It was discovered that 53% of its 118 test participants were vitamin D-deficient, 68% of them being women. This could be because Bacolod urbanites stay indoors all day and come out only when it is late in the afternoon to avoid the scorching heat of the sun. But what we don’t know is, this avoidance is also causing us health issues.

And if we don’t eat Vitamin D-rich foods, we would need to take supplements in order to prevent many diseases. Thankfully, Unilab has released a Vitamin D supplement called Forti-D–a Vitamin D capsule that is 800mg strong, enough for what we need for the day. At only P6.50/day, it provides us with enough Vitamin D for our optimum health.

Dr. Alejandro Diaz of the Philippine Neurological Association said in his talk yesterday at the L’Fisher Chalet that it only takes a few minutes each day of sunlight exposure for us to get the body to produce Vitamin D. The lack of this nutrient leads to many chronic ailments and even early death.

While we still need to go out in the sun every day, even for just a few minutes, it is nice to know that we have a Vitamin D supplement that is readily available and easy to take whenever we need it. It is affordable, too.

Now available at all leading drugstores nationwide.

Native Chicken Adobo with Turmeric

native chicken adobo
My mother’s native chicken adobo that I reheated in a non-stick pan.

When we left for Manila last August 14, my mother sent us a container of her native chicken adobo that she cooked with turmeric. That was for my brother who lives there and also for us. So we will have some ulam while just staying at home. I let it freeze in the container overnight so that it will not spoil while in transit.

My mother let the sauces dry up while cooking so that it will not spill in our luggage. So when it was time for us to eat it, I re-heated the adobo in a little oil and water so that it will not burn. And wow! It tasted very good.

So for those of you who have not tried using turmeric with your adobo, you should do so. Not only will it give a different twist to this all-time favorite chicken dish of Filipinos, you will also get to reap the health benefits of having turmeric in your diet.

By the way, this is very healthy because the native chicken was free-ranged in our backyard without medications and all. So it is all-natural. It was also dressed at home. Safe and hygienic.
